1863 – Military Discharge of Alfred Mellin Thurston.  This was after he was wounded fighting for the Union Army (Wisconsin Infantry) during the Civil War.  After some time off and healing, he re-enlisted in 1864 and served again, and got a second discharge at the end of the war.  Alfred Mellin Thurston was my paternal grandmother’s maternal grandfather.  I have visited and photographed his gravesite in Beadle County, South Dakota.
